From March 25–30, Gelato Week 2025 celebrated artisanal ice-cream with huge success in six Italian cities: Milan, Rome, Turin, Bologna, Verona, and Padua. Promoted by ConGelato, with 68 participating gelaterias, the event offered tasting trails featuring brand-new flavours.
Each city followed a unique theme – in Turin, flavours were inspired by the city’s yellow and blue colours. Milan hosted the “Gelato Week Experiences,” combining gelato and haute cuisine. The public voted for their favourites, rewarding originality and flavour balance. Among the winners: Anthologia del Gelato in Milan with “MatchaMI,” Come il Latte in Rome, and papalele in Turin. The week ended in Milan with Fuori Gelato, a festival full of showcooking and talks.

Ice cream has become a global passion – a universal pleasure that bridges cultures, generations, and tastes. But there are moments when ice cream becomes more than just a treat: it turns into a challenge, a work of art, a world record. Over the years, this beloved food has inspired feats so astonishing they’ve made it into the Guinness World Records. Here are some of the most extraordinary achievements.
1,001 Flavours in a Single Shop: Abu Dhabi’s Triumph of Creativity
In 2021, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates claimed a sweet and colourful world record: 1,001 ice cream flavours on display at the same time. This remarkable achievement was accomplished by Ice Cream Lab, a chain already famous for its innovative techniques, such as using liquid nitrogen to instantly freeze ice cream. But with this challenge, the Yas Mall team exceeded all expectations.
Every flavour was made with different, authentic ingredients, ranging from the classics – chocolate, strawberry, pistachio – to exotic and curious creations like lavender, buttered popcorn, lychee, damask rose, goat cheese with figs, and even matcha green tea with black sesame. Many flavours were inspired by Arabic cuisine, such as date and cardamom gelato.
The record attempt followed strict rules: each flavour had to be unique, identifiable, and produced in a minimum quantity for judging. The lab worked for weeks, bringing together chefs and ice cream artisans from around the world. The result? A celebration of diversity and ingenuity that turned ice cream into a true cultural masterpiece.
The World’s Tallest Ice Cream Cone: A 3.08-Metre Marvel
If you think ice cream cones are just for strolling down the street, think again. In Norway, the world’s tallest ice cream cone reached a staggering 3.08 metres. The record was set in 2015 by Henning-Olsen, one of Scandinavia’s oldest ice cream producers, founded in 1924.
The project took months of preparation and the combined expertise of engineers, refrigeration specialists, and master ice cream makers. The enormous cone was filled with over 1,000 litres of ice cream, carefully layered to maintain balance. The structure was reinforced with a steel base and covered in a giant wafer shell.
And the best part? Once Guinness confirmed the record, the massive cone was shared with the public in a full-on ice cream party, with hundreds of people enjoying a taste. Fun fact: placing the final scoop required a small crane to avoid collapsing the structure.
125 Scoops on a Single Cone: Italy’s Dimitri Panciera Breaks the Record
Italy, the homeland of artisanal gelato, had to be part of this story. Representing the country is Dimitri Panciera, who entered the Guinness World Records in 2018 for balancing 125 scopes of ice cream on a single cone. And these weren’t tiny scoops – each had to be at least three centimetres in diameter, compact, and well-defined.
But that’s not all. Panciera went on to beat his own records, the most recent on July 31, 2021, during the Artisanal Gelato Festival in Val di Zoldo. There, he placed 150 scoops on a single cone in just 3 minutes and 40 seconds, surpassing his previous 130-scoop record. His achievement proves that creativity and love for tradition can go a long way.
His motto? “Ice cream is not just food – it’s an emotion to be shared.”
Panciera’s feat has become a tourist attraction, earning him TV appearances and invitations to international gelato festivals.
These three records share a common thread: a passion for ice cream that never stops reinventing itself. Today we have vegan, gluten-free, high-protein, cocktail-inspired, and savory gelato flavours. But no matter how trends evolve, ice cream remains what it has been for centuries: a moment of sweetness, capable of surprising and delighting both young and old – even at record-breaking levels.
